JMBC Course Free surface flows and waves

28 - 31 march 2011, TU Delft, lecture room F, Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Stevinweg 1

Free surfaces are ubiquitous in our natural environment. The dynamics of the flow is highly influenced by the presence of a free surface. This leads to interesting phenomena like long and short surface waves, sub- and supercritical flows as well as anisotropic turbulence near the free surface . Understanding and predicting these phenomena is crucial for dealing with environmental water motion in relation with river discharge capacity, coastal protection, water quality issues, flooding predictions, etc.  The course will provide an introduction to the important features of free-surface flows and waves and the tools for solving practical problems.  The basic physics will be explained as well as the numerical approaches In addition to the lectures also hands-on laboratiory work, and computer exercises will be offered.

Course material will be provided; a highly recommended text book is: Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters, by Leo Holthuijsen.
