Measurement and Monitoring of Vital Functions

[course program:  pdf]

Objective
The trainee will gain insight into the physical principles of the measurement and monitoring of vital functions in state-of-the-art clinical practice.

Brief description of the course
Interactive education during five days:

  • In the morning program there are lectures from clinicians (anaesthesiologist, obstetrician, neonatologist) and medical physicists with a vast expertise in the current clinical practice in one of the subjects. Actual applications of diagnosis and therapy in heart-, vascular-lung- and brain- function will be discussed and the practical work-out of these applications at the OR, the Intensive Care Unit and several Function Departments. A special focus will be given on anaesthesiology, ventilation, pacemakers, neonatal and perinatal monitoring and patient safety.
  • In the afternoon program the trainees will work together in small groups on clinical case studies involving the introduction of new techniques and applications. Furthermore site visits to a manufacturer (Philips Medical Systems, Best ) and a teaching hospital (Máxima Medical Centre, Veldhoven) are foreseen.

Aquired expertise
The attendees will be able to have an expert opinion on the clinical relevance, relative value and reliability of measurements and monitoring techniques currently used in clinical practice to assess vital functions.

Qualification standards

  • The trainee knows which risk analysis methods apply to the clinical environment.
  • The trainee is capable of adequately applying insights from the course to a concrete medical physics subject.
